Vacation or Mortgage?

Years ago, I spoke to some friends about an incident where a couple let their friends and their church know that they could not pay their bills or meet their mortgage. Being sympathetic, the friends and church started to brainstorm on how to help this family in their financial woes. Their brainstorming ended when they discovered that the couple had planned a cruise for their anniversary.

Being somewhat discouraged and used, the friends and church told the couple they could not help them. The couple was hurt that no one would come to their rescue with the mortgage situation. They stopped attending their church and began breaking ties with their friends. The couple completely missed the point that they could have used their vacation money to pay their bills. The friends and the church were not willing to support a lifestyle the couple could not afford.
